Environmental impacts of artisanal mining

Artisanal mining creates serious environmental damage despite its smaller scale compared to industrial operations. These impacts affect ecosystems far beyond the mining sites themselves.

Deforestation:

Miners clear forests to access mineral deposits, destroying plant and animal habitats. In gold mining regions of the Amazon, miners remove vegetation and topsoil to reach gold-bearing sediments. This practice fragments forests, disrupts wildlife corridors, and eliminates food sources for many species.

Even after mining stops, the land often remains barren. Miners rarely replant trees or restore habitats, leaving behind altered landscapes that can't support original biodiversity. Water pollution:
