The different varieties of dahlia all belong to the same genus of the same name. All dahlias are perennial plants with tuberous roots, but the different species have flowers which can vary greatly in appearance. Some have a single ring of florets, others have many rows of petals which flower like an artichoke and others still have combination patterns. The colors of the dahlia types also vary greatly according to species. With cultivars, the appearance from one kind of dahlia to another can vary greatly. Dahlia ‘Karma Choc’
If you are looking for a type of showy dahlia, this is a good choice. The ‘Karma Choc’ produces very dark flowers that are reminiscent of the color of dark chocolate, hence their cultivar name. Rather than brown, they provide a deep red which can even look black in some lights, although the one in the photo had purplish tones. The petals have a velvety appearance and are very numerous.

Dahlia ‘Waltzing Mathilda'
Belonging to the group of dark-leaved dahlias, this type of dahlia stands out for the beautiful wavy petals which emanate from multiple rings. They are often used to add drama to gardens, due to their shiny and red leaves. The flowers are semi-double, salmon-coloured and have the margin of each petal outlined in pink. The petals curl slightly to give their wavy effect.

Dahlia ‘Otto's Thrill’
This variety produces large flowers up to 25 cm in diameter. They are light pink with a darker pink centre. Due to their enormous size, the flowers of the ‘Otto's Thrill' dahlia are often used as cut dahlias, to create high-quality bouquets.

Dahlia ‘Hamari Sunshine’
This is another type of cut flower with huge flower heads, reaching as much as 23 cm in diameter. It is bright yellow in color, with petals curved at the tip, giving it an appearance like the sun shining in the sky. This can be seen well in the photo below. In terms of the number of petals, the ‘Hamari Sunshine’ dahlia is a double flower.

Dahlia ‘Pink Giraffe’
If you are looking for a type of exotic dahlia, you will love this variety. Its petals are pink with white markings that give it a faded appearance. In addition, the petals are slightly rolled inwards, showing both the light pink top and the bottom with the aforementioned pattern.

Dahlia ‘David Howard’
This is a more discreet variety of dahlia than others, with small flowers of 10 cm in diameter. As seen in the photo, they are orange, with double petals that arch slightly inwards like a spoon. The dahlia David Howard cultivar is ideal for planting in the garden and providing lots of color.

Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’
This is one of the most popular varieties of dahlia. It has semi-double red petals, with yellow dots in the center, which are actually the anthers of the male part of the flower. It also has dark foliage, with a tone that goes from black to purple.

Dahlia ‘Gallery Leonardo’
This type of dahlia is compact, ideal for having in flower beds as much as containers or pots. It has the great advantage of producing many flowers and many leaves, giving either full or compact appearance. They also do not grow very tall, reaching 40 cm in height. The flowers are double and salmon-colored, light pink or other orange shades, with salmon seen in the photo.

Dahlia ‘Moonfire’
This is a dahlia variety with single petals, meaning it has much less than most others. The center is orange, becoming lighter as we move outwards on the petal until it becomes a buttery yellow. They are small, 8 cm in diameter of the flower, and a maximum of 70 cm in height in the stems. For this reason, it is classified as type of a dwarf dahlia, ideal for growing in a pot.

Dahlia ‘Marie Schnugg’
This is another compact dahlia with very special flowers because they have thin petals that curl downwards, resembling a star. As the photo depicts, they are red with a yellow center. These flowers measure 12 cm in diameter. They are tall, with the stems of the entire plant growing as much as 1.3 meters high.

Dahlia ‘Honka’
It is similar to ‘Marie Schnugg’, as it has thin, star-shaped petals, but they are pastel yellow in color. They are smaller in diameter, so it is also considered a type of small or dwarf dahlia.

Dalia ‘Gallery Art Fair’
If you are looking for a type of white dahlia, this is a great choice. Its double flowers look like a cheerleader's pompoms. The flower heads are small at about 9 cm in diameter and the entire plant can reach 50 cm in height. It is classified as a dwarf dahlia, which you can keep well in pots. It is often used as a flower for flower beds due to its carpeting ability to be used as a type of groundcover.

Dahlia ‘Glorie van Heemstede’
It is a type of large dahlia. Its petals are double and light yellow in color. While the plant itself is large, the flowers are considered to be relatively small. The flower head is flat, although it does have some volume.

Dahlia ‘Happy Single Wink’
Perhaps the type of dahlia with the oddest name, the ‘Happy Single Wink’ is a delicate dahlia with simple petals, which are usually 6 or 8 arranged around the center. The petals are dark red with yellow anthers. The red-based petals emanated from it, changing to a light pink color as they near the outside. It attracts pollinators such as bees or butterflies, so it is a great addition to attract life to your garden It also provides environmental services that benefit the ecosystem. The stems measure 60 cm high and the flowers 10 cm in diameter.

Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’
It is a kind of dahlia with double petals, but these are rolled downwards making it look more spacious. These petals look thin and long, being dark reddish or maroon in color. The closer they get to the center, the more they turn to a gray color that looks like velvet. They are medium-sized flowers of 15 cm diameter, and the stems are tall, reaching 1.7 meters in height.

Dahlia ‘Café au Lait’
Also known as the chocolate brown dahlia, this dahlia cultivar produces beige to very light cream-colored flowers. These represent to milky coffee color of its namesake. It has double flowers with many petals. The stems produce small groups of inflorescence. The leaves are serrated and it grows large, up to 1.2 meters tall. It is a type of cut flower, used for its good size, color and shape of the petals.
