Most Beautiful Pink Sand Beaches in the World

The island of Elafonisi (meaning ‘deer island’ in Greek) is located towards the southwest of the island of Crete. It is well-known for its pink sand beaches. This island is connected to mainland Crete by a shallow reef that can be crossed on foot when the tide goes out.

Elafonisi forms a reserve for the flora and fauna of the western coast of Crete, mainly for the crocus species Androcymbium rechingeri which is endemic to the region. This plant is a priority species and to ensure its conservation, this protected natural space was created in 2006.

Not moving far, the next most beautiful pink sand beach in the world is in the northwest of Crete, specifically on the Gramvousa peninsula. It is about 56 kilometers from the city of Chania is Balos, one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. It is divided into two parts. First is the lagoon, second is its incredible pink beach of fine sand bathed by shallow, warm crystalline waters, as seen in the photo below.

In the deeper parts of the water, beyond the rocks and the lagoon, you can snorkel and dive. If you are lucky, you may come across monk seals (Monachus monachus) or various types of sea turtles. Unlike Elafonisi, this beach is not as crowded and is an ideal place to take photos.
