Japanese cherry (Prunus serrulata)

Called sakura in its native Japanese, the Japanese cherry is one of the national symbols of Japan. The lifespan of the cherry blossom is very short, which is why people gather around these trees to discuss the usefulness and meaning of life.

Since the Japanese cherry does not produce edible fruit, the cherries we eat come from other varieties of cherry trees. Discover these other different types of cherry trees in our related guide.

Along with its succulent fruit, the peach blossom provides equal or greater visual appeal. It is a small flower, in various shades of pink that go from the palest to the strongest. They are solitary, twinned or divided. They have numerous bracts, which are a kind of green petals that join the flower to the branch. This is because it lacks a stem. The flower appears at each node of the branch.
